Tasks of the BStU
The Federal Commissioner for the Stasi Records is safekeeping and securing the archival holdings of the former secret police and intelligence organization of the communist German Democratic Republic. One of the Stasi Records Agency’s most important tasks is to provide people access to files that concern them. -
Overview - Ministry of State Security
The Ministry of State Security was the secret police force, secret intelligence service and organ for criminal investigations, primarily in political criminal cases. It was set up under the direct guidance of the Soviet secret police. The MfS had its own detention centres and own armed forces. -
Access to Records
The Stasi Records Agency (BStU) is responsible for making the records of the State Security Service of the former GDR accessible to the public. Every individual has the right to request to view his own personal file. Limited access to records on missing or deceased persons is available to near relatives for specific purposes. -

We offer you the special opportunity to learn about the history of the Stasi at an authentic site: on the former grounds of the Ministry of State Security. Visit "Haus 1", the centre of the complex. This is where Erich Mielke, the Minister of State Security, had his office until November 1989. -
The Reconstruction of Torn Documents
During the Peaceful Revolution in 1989/90, large amounts of documents from the MfS were secretly destroyed by the ministry's own staff. The reconstruction of torn-up documents is one-of-a-kind in the field of archives in the FRG. Ca 16,000 bags of torn material still remained in the archives. -
