Inspection of files and examinations

The application for private inspection of files
Every individual has the right to request of the Federal Commissioner whether there is information contained on his/her person in the records made available. If this is the case, he/she can receive information, obtain access to and release of the records.

The records on missing or deceased near relatives are only accessible to a specific group of persons and are limited for certain purposes.

Applications of researchers and media representatives
The Federal Commissioner supports research, press, radio and film (media) as well as facilities for political education in the historic and political reconstruction of the activity of the State Security Service, of the regime mechanisms of the former GDR and/or of the former Soviet zones of occupation as well as in the reconstruction of the national socialist past. The records of the State Security Service can be made available within the scope of an admissible application.

Petition of public and private agencies
The examination of persons for earlier official or unofficial activity for the State Security Service is possible on the basis of a written petition by public and private agencies. The circle of persons to be checked was redefined with the Seventh Law for the Amendment of the Stasi Records Law of 12/21/2006.
Petitions on pension issues, on open asset questions or on issues of medals are also processed. The Federal Commissioner’s records are available for purposes of criminal prosecution and prevention of danger as well as for rehabilitation and reparation.
