On the archives of the BStU in the central office and in the outposts
In the archive of the central office in Berlin and in the 14 archives of the outposts of the Federal Commissioner the legacy of the former intelligence service of the GDR developed in the four decades of existence of the Ministry for State Security (MfS) is preserved.
In addition to the written legacy, the MfS record also includes numerous audio-visual data media, such as photos, slides, videos, films and recordings. On one hand, the record consists of files already archived at the time of the State Security Service and on the other hand, the material, which the service units were working on up to the peaceful revolution of 1989/90.
The safeguarding, organization, development and preparation of all records is incumbent on the Archive Inventory Department of the Office of the Federal Commissioner and the subject area archive units of the outposts.
The focal point of the display on the internet is presently still on information on the functions and results of the activity in the archive of the central office, in which approximately half of all of the records of the State Security Service are preserved. Step by step, additional notes on the situation of and use of the records in the central office are recorded in the following pages. Corresponding details on the outposts are added.
