About the archives of the BStU

The archives are responsible for safekeeping, utilization and accessibility of all records of the Ministry of State Security. In addition to written documents, the archives also contain a large amount of stored audio-visual material. About half of the 111 kilometres of documents is stored in Berlin.

Inventory Information on the Records of the State Security Service in the Berlin Headquarters

The inventory overview provides an initial overview of the content, scope and usability of the records of the Ministry of State Security (MfS) held in the BStU headquarters. It is of a provisional nature since file indexing is not yet complete. The MfS holdings are essentially divided into partial holdings of the various service units and the archival holdings.

The Reconstruction of Torn Documents

During the Peaceful Revolution in 1989/90, large amounts of documents from the MfS were secretly destroyed by the ministry's own staff. The reconstruction of torn-up documents is one-of-a-kind in the field of archives in the FRG. Ca 16,000 bags of torn material still remained in the archives.

Public Tours of the Archives

Visit our archives and get a glimpse into the inner life of the former secret police. You will see the index rooms and the stacks and learn how the files are catalogued. You will also receive background information about the virtual and manural reconstruction of torn-up documents.
