Public Tours of the Archives

During a tour of the archives visitors are given a glimpse into the inner life of the secret police.

The following awaits you:

  • Information about the structure and methods of the Ministry of State Security and about its dissolution
  • A tour through selected index rooms and stacks
  • Information about the preserved holdings
  • An explanation of the indexes
  • A glimpse into how the files are catalogued and preserved
  • An impression of sample files and file indexes
  • Background information about the virtual and manual reconstruction of torn-up documents
  • The opportunity to submit a request to view files (identity card required)

On every first Tuesday of the month - except in January - from 5pm to 7pm, a few of the repositories are open to visitors who have registered in advance. The group meets in the Foyer of the BStU Archive in "House 7". Tours are in German. English tours for groups of ten or more can be booked in advance.
